Step 4 - Create an alternative layout

In this article we will show you, how to create an alternative layout.

For an alternative layout you should proceed as for a template override. The difference is in the name of the file you use. For a template override you will use the "default.php" that overrides the Joomla core file of the component or module. For an alternative layout, you should rename the file.

Create an alternative layout

The only rule is: underlines are not allowed in the name. Underlines are reseved for more complex layouts where more the one file is involved. The first file has a name without underline and the files that are been called in the first one have names with underlines. For example, when we create an alternative layout for articles (com_content/articles) named impressum.php, we can call a second file on it. The second file should be named "impressum_part2.php".
