Step 2 - How and where can I create an override?

In this article we will show you, where you can create your Override.

Where can I find the Overrides?

There are two ways:

  • through FTP
  • through the Joomla Backend

If you use the FTP way, you would find the output files in the folder of the corresponding component or module. In our example the path will be: root/components/com_content/views/article/tmpl/default.php

As we explained in the previous article, we see the "com_content", it is the content component of Joomla and the output is of type "article".

You can copy the file default.php and store it in your template folder: root/templates/your-template/html/com_content/article/default.php.

This path structure is obligatory. For a module the path would be: "root/templates/your-template/html/mod_yourModule/".

The easy way

The easier and safer way to create overrides is using the corresponding function in the Backend. You will find this under "Extensions" -> "Template Manager" -> "Templates" -> Your Template.

Here you will find your template with all folders and files. The tab "Create Overrides" is the one you will need now.

Create an override

Here you will see an overview of all possible template overrides you can create. With a click on the corresponding item, Joomla will create a copy of all files needed for this override directly under your template folder. Then you can modify these files as you like.
